Kyiv Lawyer to Stand Trial Over $25,000 Disability Bribe
Law enforcement officers have completed the investigation and sent the case materials to court regarding a metropolitan lawyer who is accused of extorting money from a client for assistance in determining his disability group.
According to the investigation, a 55-year-old man, who had a number of diseases that could be grounds for receiving a disability group, turned to a lawyer for legal assistance.
The lawyer convinced the client that it was impossible to obtain disability documents free of charge and that if he went to the doctors on his own, he would definitely be refused. However, for $25,000 and two months of time, he would use his connections to help resolve this issue.
Law enforcement officers detained the lawyer in June. They claim, "while receiving the entire amount of the illegal benefit."
He will be tried for extortion and receiving unlawful benefits for influencing doctors' decisions regarding the man's disability classification. The man faces up to 8 years in prison with confiscation of property.
During the investigation, the suspect was given a preventive measure in the form of detention with the right to post bail in the amount of UAH 665,000.
