The plot of the case: as stated in the court verdict, on the morning of August 19, 2025, surgeon and member of the Ukrainian Communist Party, Oleksandr Popyk, received a bribe of $300 from a relative of a conscript undergoing a medical examination at the central district hospital. In return, the doctor was supposed to issue the recruit a certificate with a fake diagnosis, which would later affect the decision on unfitness for military service.
At the trial, Oleksandr Popyk explained that he had indeed been approached that day by a relative of a conscript who was undergoing military service. He allegedly brought with him medical certificates and examination results that indicated certain health problems for his relative. The doctor admitted his guilt and noted that he did not demand money for the fake document, but accepted it.
Judge Andriy Savchak found Oleksandr Popyk guilty of receiving undue benefit for influencing decision-making (Part 1 of Article 368 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine) and sentenced him to a fine of UAH 24,500 with deprivation of the right to hold positions in military medical commissions for 2 years. He must also pay the costs of an expert - UAH 4,457. The verdict can still be appealed.
