Odesa region border guard suspected of extorting $1,000 for caviar transport

In the Odessa region, a border guard inspector was reported suspicious and detained while receiving money for the unhindered transportation of goods across the border. According to the investigation, the official offered to avoid an in-depth inspection of luggage in exchange for a monetary reward.
This was reported by the press service of the Specialized Prosecutor's Office for Defense of the Southern Region.
According to the materials of the pre-trial investigation, the situation began at the end of December 2025. Investigators assume that the border guard learned of the citizen's intention to import a batch of fish caviar from Moldova to Ukraine and offered to not conduct a thorough inspection of the car for $500.
In case of refusal, the prosecutor's office noted, the official threatened to create artificial obstacles during the control. Further actions were carried out under the supervision of law enforcement agencies.
In January 2026, a man crossed the border with 10 kg of caviar. The next day, while transferring $1,000, the border guard was detained.
The man was informed of suspicion under Part 3 of Article 368 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine - extortion and receiving unlawful benefit. The court chose for him a preventive measure in the form of detention with the possibility of posting bail in the amount of 240,242 hryvnias.
