Three ex-law enforcers face trial for $150K extortion

Investigators of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAP) have referred to court a case of extortion of a bribe of $150,000 by law enforcement officers. Two former employees of the Bureau of Economic Security and a former employee of the Kyiv Region Police will appear in court.
This was reported by the NABU press service.
According to the investigation, two BES detectives and an investigator from the Kyiv Region Police demanded $150,000 from the businessman for not being held criminally liable and for unblocking the company's accounts.
The defendants pressured the businessman, convincing him of the inevitability of prosecution, conviction, and confiscation of property. After the publication of information about the investigative actions, the individuals were dismissed from their positions.
The suspects were charged in June of this year. They were charged under Part 4 of Article 368 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — accepting an offer, promise, or receiving an illegal benefit by an official. The sanction of the article provides for imprisonment for up to 12 years with deprivation of the right to hold certain positions or engage in certain activities for a term of up to three years, with confiscation of property.
We previously reported that the HACC extended the duties of the former director of the Cancer Institute.
