Lawyer to stand trial for $25,000 draft evasion promise
Kyiv law enforcement officers have completed the investigation and submitted to the court the case materials regarding a lawyer suspected of corruption and possession of ammunition. According to the investigation, instead of providing legal assistance, the lawyer offered his client $25,000 to negotiate his removal from military service.
A Kyiv resident, intending to legally update his military registration documents, turned to a lawyer for legal assistance. However, instead of providing qualified legal assistance, the lawyer offered the client money to negotiate the exclusion of his husband from military registration as unfit for service.
According to the case materials, the lawyer promised to resolve all issues related to passing the military medical commission (MMC) without the client's presence at the commission.
For such services, during February 2025, the lawyer received money from the husband in three installments for a total of $25,000.
The department claims that they detained the lawyer "red-handed" - while receiving the last tranche of money. During the search, the suspect was also found to have cartridges and several grenades.
He was charged under two articles of the Criminal Code at once - under Part 3 of Article 369-2 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (obtaining unlawful benefit for oneself and a third party for influencing a decision-making process by a person authorized to perform state functions, combined with the extortion of such benefit), as well as Part 1 of Article 263 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (storing ammunition without a permit provided for by law).
The sanction of the articles provides for imprisonment for a term of three to eight years with confiscation of property.
