Odesa officials suspected over UAH 18 mln army bed overpayment
Large-scale abuses were exposed in Odessa during the purchase of beds for military personnel. According to the investigation, the state overpaid almost 18 million hryvnias of budget funds.
As established by the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI), starting in 2023, two heads of the Odessa Housing and Operations Department purchased property for the army at significantly inflated prices while in office. The officials failed to ensure proper verification of the economic justification of the cost of the products and improperly performed their official duties.
As a result, the budget suffered significant losses, and funds intended to meet the needs of military personnel were used inefficiently.
Currently, both officials have been charged with negligence in military service, which caused significant harm under martial law — this is part 4 of Article 425 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. This is punishable by up to eight years in prison.
The court has already chosen a preventive measure in the form of detention for one of the detainees with the right to post bail in the amount of 17 million hryvnias.
Earlier, law enforcement officers uncovered a scheme to supply the Armed Forces of Ukraine with low-quality mines and embezzle advances. The cost of the losses was almost UAH 3 billion.
In addition, the Security Service of Ukraine and the National Anti-Corruption Bureau have dismantled a large-scale scheme operating in two regions of the country. Criminals embezzled 102 million budget hryvnias from the production of dynamic protection for tanks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine .
