Ex-Rakhiv Mayor Medvid Extradited from Romania
Former mayor of Rakhiv, in Zacarpathia, Viktor Medvid, suspected of embezzlement of budget funds, was extradited from Romania; the prosecutor's office will appeal the amount of bail he paid.
The competent authorities of the Republic of Romania handed over to Ukrainian law enforcement officers the former mayor, who, after being reported suspicious in 2023, was hiding abroad and was put on the international wanted list by Interpol channels.
After his extradition to Ukraine on September 10, the court chose a preventive measure in the form of detention for the detainee. At the same time, the investigating judge determined an alternative in the form of a bail of about 333 thousand hryvnias. As specified by the prosecutor's office, the former mayor posted the bail.
The prosecutor's office considers the bail amount insufficient and will appeal the decision. In addition, such a bail amount is not able to ensure the suspect's proper procedural behavior, given his previous attempts to evade justice, prosecutors emphasize.
According to the investigation, the man was detained twice in the EU. At the end of 2025, he was detained in the Czech Republic and banned from leaving the country. However, he later fled to Romania, where he was detained again.
According to the investigation, the former mayor is suspected of involvement in a scheme to overstate the cost of work during the construction of a rehabilitation and health center. On paper, the work was completed in full. However, an examination showed that the actual volume of work performed and its cost were overstated.
The former official was reported in absentia on suspicion of embezzlement of another's property through abuse of official position, committed by prior conspiracy of a group of persons, as well as official forgery (Part 4 of Article 191 and Part 1 of Article 366 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
The sanctions of the incriminated articles provide for up to eight years of imprisonment, as well as deprivation of the right to hold certain positions or engage in certain activities for a period of up to three years.
