Ex-rector of Donetsk Medical University sentenced for car bribes

The former rector of Donetsk National Medical University was found guilty of receiving illegal benefits and attempting to conceal illegal assets. He was sentenced to imprisonment and had two cars confiscated.
The verdict was announced on the website of the HIgh Anti-Corruption Court.
This is the former rector of the National Medical University of Ukraine Petro Kondratenko, who was declared a suspect in February 2019, and his case was transferred to court in December 2020. At that time, the official was accused of extorting two cars worth about 2.9 million hryvnias in order to enroll foreign citizens in the university. Investigators proved that Kondratenko received the cars and signed the enrollment orders.
The panel of judges of the HACC passed a verdict against the former rector on January 13. He was found guilty of two articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine:
· receipt by an official of an unlawful benefit in a particularly large amount, combined with extortion, part 4 of Article 368;
· committing actions aimed at masking the illegal acquisition, possession and use of property obtained illegally, Part 1 of Article 209.
The HACC sentenced Kondratenko to 9 years in prison, with a three-year ban on holding leadership positions in higher education institutions. He was also ordered to forfeit all property he owned, as well as cars he illegally obtained.
The former rector will serve his sentence from the moment of his detention, the court said. Kondratenko can still file an appeal within 30 days.
