The head of a psychiatric department and a psychiatrist were detained in Kyiv. They are suspected of extorting $25,000 for treatment and disability documents.

This was reported by the Kyiv City Prosecutor's Office.

The head of the department was approached on behalf of a man with mental illness, with a request to help him obtain disability. It is noted that medical indicators and established diagnoses could be the basis for obtaining it.

According to the investigation, the doctor informed that the patient must undergo inpatient treatment for 150 days and pay $25 thousand. The doctor explained this amount by "difficult times."

According to law enforcement, a psychiatrist from the same department was involved in the scheme. She was supposed to prescribe treatment, prepare the necessary documents, and contact the man who sought help for the patient.

They ordered the money to be left in the hospital's fire extinguisher. After handing over the money, both doctors were detained.

They were informed of suspicion under Part 2 of Article 28 and Part 4 of Article 368 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine - obtaining unlawful benefit by prior conspiracy by a group of persons. The sanction of the article provides for 8 to 12 years of imprisonment with confiscation of property.

The court chose preventive measures for the suspects in the form of detention with the possibility of posting bail in the amount of 3 million hryvnias.

We previously reported that the SAPO appealed the acquittal of a judge of the Kharkiv Economic Court.
