Sumy judge fired for $2000 bribe to acquit drunk driver

The High Council of Justice dismissed judge Mykola Shershak of the Zarechny District Court of Sumy from his position. The officer of Themis accepted a bribe of $2,000 for making an acquittal in a drunk driving case.

The High Council of Justice has decided to dismiss judge Mykola Shershak of the Zarechny District Court of Sumy based on the submission of the Third Disciplinary Chamber. According to the text of the complaint to the High Council of Justice, the servant of Themis received $2,000 from the defendant in the case of drunk driving for the closure of two administrative proceedings.
In 2019, law enforcement officers searched Shershak's home and seized $2,000 in illegal benefits received by the judge from people who drove under the influence of alcohol. Mykola Shershak was detained and a criminal case was opened.
After the administrative offense case was received by Shershak from his place of work and the Holosiivskyi District Court of Kyiv, the judge met with the defendants out of court regarding the transfer of funds for the adoption of acquittal decisions.
The first court hearing in the judge's case took place in November 2019. During the meeting of the Third Disciplinary Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice, Judge Shershak and his lawyers did not want to provide explanations on the merits of the disciplinary case.
At this meeting, which the judge and the accused plan during the conversation, the servant of Themis received a bribe.
The criminal case against Judge Shershak is still being considered by the High Anti-Corruption Court.
